The 18th annual Ridge Ramble Biathlon was held on Saturday 4 June in hot, sunny, windless conditions, which proved challenging to many competitors. A total of thirty-five athletes entered the race. This long-standing event was one of the factors responsible for Tumbler Ridge receiving the coveted True Sport award in 2005.
Kids cycled 4 kms and ran 2 kms, and adults cycled a fast, flat 10 km route followed by a 5 km run. Thanks to a decision by Mayor and Council, the kids? route was once again barricaded, guaranteeing a safe event. Constable Thorne kindly provided an RCMP escort for both races.
Youngest competitors were Casey Strang, Connor Fletcher and Leann Fletcher, in the 7 and under category. The warm weather did not prevent some exceptional results, including three course records: Carina Helm broke her own record in the Girls 11-15 category, Natalie Sharman and Crystal Fry set a new record in the Kids? Team event, and Kevin and Birgit Sharman set the fastest time so far in the Adult Mixed Team category.
A huge amount of organization goes into putting on such an event. Many thanks to the wonderful team of volunteers, course marshals, timers, and registration officials for putting on a flawless race.
