The Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation today announced a special grant of $50,000 to celebrate its 50th anniversary in May 2005. Charitable organizations located in British Columbia may be eligible to apply for the $50,000 for an exceptional project in the area of either social services or cultural and creative arts. The successful project is expected to leave a lasting legacy for the winning organization, its community, or both.
This one-time grant is in addition to the regular annual grant disbursements of The Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation.
?With this special grant, the Board of Governors intends to honour the extraordinary generosity of Leon and Thea Koerner,? says Nicholas Thornton, Chairperson of the Foundation. ?It was their dream to give back to the province that became their adopted home. This special grant is one way in which we can acknowledge and celebrate, fifty years later, the Koerners? remarkable vision.?
Eligible organizations are invited to submit a Letter of Intent by May 28, 2004. A short list of projects will be selected from those submissions to undergo a more detailed application process. Criteria and Guidelines for the special grant can be found at www.koernerfoundation.ca. Those without Internet access can call 604-224-2611.
?Give with warm hearts and warm hands??, Leon Koerner stated at the first meeting of the Board of Governors when the Foundation was established in 1955. His words have guided the Foundation?s activities to this day.
Dr. and Mrs. Koerner?s original gift of $1 million has generated over eight million dollars for projects throughout British Columbia in the areas of cultural and creative arts, social services, higher education and pre-professional studies in the arts.
