DAWSON CREEK, B.C. ? Global-Spectrum Facility Management along with sister food and beverage company Ovations Food Services, were excited to introduce the newest addition to the EnCana Events Centre when they rolled out a kitchen-sampling for invited VIPs on Thursday, January 15.
34-year-old chef, Sonia O?Keefe is a 2001 graduate of the Ballymaloe Cookery School in County Cork, Ireland. She chose the prestigious cooking school in her fifth year of English study in university. And although some may think it an odd combination, the lady has her own ideas.
?Maybe someday I?ll write a cook book,? she said, adding that she loves cooking so it would be a great combination.
O?Keefe researched the school among others in her final year of university and chose it for a variety of reasons.
?The most important thing to me was that the school met the philosophy I already held when it came to cooking and how I felt about food.? Instructed by the owner of the school herself, Darina Allen, O?Keefe explained that the students of the prestigious Bally Maloe have tremendous opportunities upon graduation.
O?Keefe took the cooking course with 49 other students from 11 different countries. Bally Maloe is a 100-acre farm that grows all of its own herbs and produce and O?Keefe says each morning students would go out, cut the herbs and pick any produce needed for the day so that everything was fresh.
?I?d like to be able to source the local community more during the summer months because I think it?s really important to use what the local region is supplying,? she said.
The Newfoundland born chef relocated to Dawson Creek recently for her husband?s career, bringing their six-year-old son and is pleased with her new environment.
?I feel very lucky to work with Pat (Johnston), Tanya (Johnson) and Tammy (Devivieiros) ? we have a great team here.?
General Manager of the EnCana Events Centre, Global-Spectrum?s Gunnar Fox expressed his views on the new addition to the team at the Centre, confirming O?Keefe?s not the only one that feels it?s a good fit.
?We are very lucky to have Sonia, a chef of such high caliber,? he says. ?Her experience and passion shows in every meal she prepares and she is one of the final pieces to the puzzle… amazing food and a spectacular building; don?t take my word for it you have to experience it for yourself.?
O?Keefe?s responsibilities don?t stop with her commitment to family and the EnCana Events Centre however; she?s also a partner in her own business back in Newfoundland called Lighthouse Picnics.
The restored lighthouse business in Ferryland, Newfoundland is successful in its own right after seven seasons, being featured in Chatelaine magazine, Canada A.M., and EnRoute magazine as one of the ?100 Best Things to do in the World.?
O?Keefe is excited about her position at the new EnCana Events Centre.
?There?s so much room for creativity and ideas here? It?s nice to give people the opportunity to watch an event and enjoy and test new foods.?
