TUMBLER RIDGE, BC ? If you have not yet attempted the ?toughest and most beautiful half marathon in the world? you have another opportunity to do so this summer.
The Emperor?s Challenge Race Committee has confirmed the event will start at 9 am on Saturday, August 6, at the Babcock Core Lodge site, about a half hour?s drive from Tumbler Ridge. This challenging course – spanning 21.1 kilometers up and over Roman Mountain – is open to adults and kids, runners and walkers, individuals and teams. What began as a local event with 39 runners has grown into one of the region?s most prestigious races ? more than 140 runners and walkers from across BC and Alberta went the distance in 2004.
Not for the faint of heart, the Emperor?s Challenge has gained popularity with serious athletes and become a symbol of determination and accomplishment. Kris Swanson has captured the title 6 years running and calls this race ?the one I train for all year long.?
Organizers and volunteers ensure that runners are not only safe, but well cared for. A hot barbecue meal and massage tables are waiting for those that cross the finish line, and T-shirts and photos are made available for purchase as personal mementos. Awards are presented immediately following the race.
In keeping with Roman tradition, organizers encourage runners to dress like Emperors, in togas and laurel wreaths, for the Runners? Reception and Pre-Race Slide Show on Friday, August 5.
