Social Responsibility

Funding is being made available to schools through the Ministry of Education to promote Trades awareness in grades 6-9.

District staff attended a workshop hosted by the RCMP at how the larger community can work together to impact crime prevention.

The City of Dawson Creek has received a $10,000 grant to assess crystal meth use in the city. The results will be of particular interest to the School District.

Local Calendar? The local calendar for the 2006/07 school year was approved.

School Capacity Report ?

Decreased enrolment in the District necessitated a review of schools and capacities to determine where efficiencies could be made. In particular, Parkhill Elementary School?s enrolment is low and declining. At the Board?s, request, the Superintendent conducted a review of the impact of the closure of Parkhill Elementary School. He presented his findings which centred on four areas:

-Educational impact on students

-Catchment area

-Population trends

-Financial implications

-Other themes from emails & meetings

The Board decided not to close Parkhill Elementary School at this time. Further to this, and with respect to challenge of declining enrolment and diminishing resources, the Board?s Education Committee will develop criteria that will guide the Board in making decisions with regard to stewardship of resources over the next 3 years.

Dual Credit Program-Hairdressing ? The Board approved funding to allow a Hairdressing program in partnership with Northern Lights College. The program would begin in 2007, at the NLC Chetwynd campus.

Reports From the Secretary-Treasurer

Bid For Northern BC Winter Games ? The Board gave its support for the City of Dawson Creek?s bid for the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Northern BC Winter Games.

Reports From the Operations Manager

New Board Office ?

An update was given on the renovations to the new Board office. The new building will allow the District to consolidate operations from several different locations, including the Bus Garage, Maintenance, Administration, and the Resource Centre. Proceeds from the sale of the resulting surplus properties will be used to pay for the new facility.
