Books for B.C. Babies program offered in Tumbler Ridge

The government of B.C. is aiming to make the province the most literate jurisdiction in North America by 2010. One of the programs helping this plan of action is the literacy program, Books for B.C. Babies. Books for B.C. Babies is a community-based program that focuses on the importance of reading to newborns. Started in 2005, Books for B.C. Babies ensures all babies born in B.C. receive a free children?s book and CD.

Michele Burton, Tumbler Ridge Library Manager, wants all moms in Tumbler Ridge to know the library participates in this program. She encourages parents to tell the library when your children are born. Upon doing so, parents will receive a bag which includes a baby book, CD and information on reading with your children. Burton is hoping that funding will continue so children can receive a new book on their birthday, every year until they start school.

The Books for B.C. Babies is hoping to encourage parents to read to their children, and it aims to create a positive association with books and the library with babies and their parents.
