British Columbia Year in Review

January: VANCOUVER – A 69-year-old businessman, Riasat Ali Khan, who was described as a pillar of the Lower Mainland’s Pakistani community was shot to death outside his north Surrey home.

Maui, Hawaii – B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell was arrested and charged with impaired driving while holidaying in Hawaii.

February: REVELSTOKE, B.C. – Seven Alberta teenage skiers are dead after being buried by a massive snow slide in the Rogers Pass area of Glacier National Park, about 65 kilometres east of Revelstoke.

April: VANCOUVER – Eighteen years after an Air India jet exploded over the Atlantic, two B.C. men are going on trial ? charged with the murder of all 329 people aboard flight 182.

July: PRAGUE – Vancouver and Whistler have been selected to play host to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games ? defeating Pyeongchang, South Korea in the second round of balloting by the International Olympic Committee.

VANCOUVER – A provincial court judge has ruled that Robert William Pickton will stand trial for the murders of 15 of Vancouver’s missing women, after police find human remains on his pig farm.

August: KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Hundreds of people from the fire-ravaged area of the Thompson Valley north of Kamloops found out that their homes didn?t survive the huge McLure/Barriere fire.

KELOWNA, B.C. – 20,000 Kelowna residents were forced from their homes , as gusty winds drove a wall of flames through residential neighbourhoods on the city’s south side, destroying more than 200 houses.

September: Fire Recovery continues in the Okanogan as people try to rebuild, relocate, or renovate their fire damaged homes.

October: SQUAMISH, B.C. ? Flooding in the Squamish/Whistler area. Two people died and another two went missing when their cars were swept away after a bridge was washed out along the Sea-to-Sky highway.

November: VANCOUVER – Carole James has been elected as the new leader of the B.C. NDP, defeating former MLA Leonard Krog and Oak Bay councillor Nils Jensen on the second ballot.

VANCOUVER – The star witness at the Air India trial has told the court Ripudaman Singh Malik confessed his involvement in the 1985 bombing to her.

December: VANCOUVER – Ferry service ground to a halt along the B.C. coast as picket lines went up, and ferries made their last runs.

The walkout by the B.C. Ferry and Marine Workers’ Union began after the provincial government refused to lift a cooling-off period.
