Canadian Sport Awards to honour three outstanding True Sport Communities

(Ottawa, ON ? March 14, 2005) ? The True Sport Foundation (TSF), in partnership with Bell Canada, is very pleased to announce that the communities of Edmonton (AB), Sherbrooke (QC) and Tumbler Ridge (BC) are this year?s recipients of the Bell True Sport Community Award. The three communities will be recognized at the 32nd Annual Canadian Sport Awards on March 29, 2005 for their outstanding contribution to values-driven sport.

Now in its second year, this national program recognizes the important role that sport can play in contributing to healthy and vibrant communities. ?We believe that there are many Canadian communities that live the values of True Sport. This award is meant to highlight these success stories and to serve as an inspiration for other communities,? said Paul Melia, President of the True Sport Foundation.

The TSF received a number of compelling nominations for the award. Many communities described their initiatives to promote values-driven sport and told stories of their success in reducing barriers, increasing access, and engaging youth through sport. Others shared how they honour local sport heroes.

The vision for this program is to encourage more and more communities to sign on to True Sport, a national movement designed to celebrate the sport we want ? for our kids and our communities. One of the goals of the True Sport Movement is to have 2,010 True Sport Communities by 2010.

Edmonton, Sherbrooke, and Tumbler Ridge will receive a True Sport Community road sign and an opportunity to stimulate True Sport programs and initiatives in their communities. A presentation will be made to each Mayor, where the community can sign a True Sport Declaration.

The True Sport Foundation is the national, charitable organization committed to ensuring that sport makes a positive contribution to Canadian society. The TSF is a key contributor to the True Sport Strategy, a collaboration of governments and members of the sport, recreation and physical activity sectors committed to the belief that values-driven sport makes a powerful, positive contribution to the development of individuals, communities and Canadian society.
