A prospective developer of three wind power projects near Tumbler Ridge is edging closer to financial backing from GE Energy Financial Services.

In mid-February, Finavera Wind Energy announced it was close to reaching an agreement with GE Energy Financial Services on the company’s 77-megawatt Wildmare Wind Energy project, located 8 kilometres northwest of Chetwynd.

Grade 7 students to stay at high school

Increasing student populations at Tumbler Ridge Elementary (TRE)  played a big role in School District 59’s (SD59) board decision last Wednesday (February 23) to keep Grade 7 students at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

“The logistics of it just didn’t make sense at the end of the day,” said SD59 superintendent Rob Dennis.

With a doubling of the kindergarten class this year and the expected start of the StrongStart program at Tumbler Ridge Elementary school in September, Dennis said the disparity in student numbers between the elementary and high schools will begin to even out.

“This year was a double cohort (in kindergarten), and we expect that’s going to continue going into the future,” said Dennis.

Newest hotel getting bites

As the sale process continues for Tumbler Ridge’s newest hotel, a new restaurant is close to putting down roots.

A lease for the space was signed last Wednesday (February 24), said co-owner Shirley Nahulak, who plans to operate the Western Steakhouse with her daughter, Shareen Walter. The pair hope to open the business in late March or early April.

“We’re happy for the opportunity to come to Tumbler Ridge,” said the long-time Chetwynd resident. The mother-daughter team brings a wealth of experience with them, having operated the “Wooly Bully Pub” on Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue for eight years. The Western Steakhouse is an original restaurant concept, and is slated to be open from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m., seven days a week.
