Chris DeLeeuw of Tumbler Ridge, B.C. formally from Manning, AB & Ponoka, AB passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 51 yrs. He was born in Lacombe, coming very early to the delight, surprise and worry of his parents Alphonse & Esther DeLeeuw of Bashaw, weighing in at 3lbs 4oz.
He grew up on a farm where he learned his strong work ethics that he carried with him until his passing. He attended school in Mecca Glen until Gr 9 and then finished at the Ponoka Composite High. He worked for the Department of Highways, UFA Lumber, Hinton Saw Mill, and gravel truck driving with his older brother Paul.
One day in Sept of 1978 Chris came to visit a fellow Knights of Columbus member where he met Bernita (wearing her finest cow splattered smelling clothes) and history was made on August 9, 1980 when they were married. I guess that is why Chris always called Bernita (heifer)!! Chris worked at Great West Feeds & Quality Feeds until they left Ponoka.
On March 8th, 1991, Jennifer Lynn, their little Pride and Joy, was born. Chris carried her around the hospital for three solid hrs showing her off. Chris loved spending as much time as he could being a great father and husband. In June 29, 1997 Chris, Bernita & Jen left Ponoka and moved to Manning, Alberta where they bought and ran the Manning Mohawk. They both worked hard for 7 ½ yrs, building the business up. They won Business of the Year in 2002. In February of 2005, they sold and moved to Tumbler Ridge where they would eventually like to retire.
Chris started working for Ledcor driving a Coal Truck. He loved to brag to his older brother that he drove a bigger truck.
Chris loved the mountains, hiking, camping and quading. He was a very caring person and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will always be remembered for his laughter, tricks, smart comebacks and his fun loving spirit.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Bernita of 27 years, their daughter, Jennifer, his dog Kusco. Sisters Linda Knight (Lyall) of Tees, Dee Sehlstrom (Roger) of Red Deer, Theresa Stemo (Larry) of Bashaw, Andrea DeLeeuw of Edmonton, one brother Lyall DeLeeuw of Blackfalls, 48 nieces and nephews, and 44 great nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father in February 2008, his mother Esther in October 2004, and his brother Paul in November 2006.
A Memorial was held on June 24/08 at the Holy Cross Parish in Tumbler Ridge. On June 29, 2008, a prayer service was held at the Bowker Funeral Chapel and on June 30, 2008, a funeral was held at the St. Augustine Catholic Church. He was laid to rest on July 3, 2008 at the Ponoka Forest Home Cemetery.
