PROVINCE-WIDE ? Power Pioneers — an organization representing retired BC Hydro employees who support their communities through volunteerism ? is accepting applications from young people for its annual Beginning a Lifetime of Community Service awards
Since 2002, BC Hydro?s Power Pioneers has sponsored Beginning a Lifetime of Community Service awards. This awards program recognizes young people from across British Columbia for the contribution they make as volunteers in their communities. Fifteen individual awards of $500 each will be presented to young students in communities across the province in May/June 2006.
?Power Pioneers welcome the opportunity to recognize and applaud the volunteer contributions of the youth in our communities,? said BC Hydro Power Pioneer President, Rene Sampson. ?Our world depends on the energy, care and compassion these young people bring with them into the future and this is our way of saying thank you.?
Young people in all areas of B.C. are invited to participate in the program. Candidates for this award must meet the following criteria:
·Must be residents of BC.
·Must be 18 years of age or younger at the time of application.
·Must be in good academic standing (passing grades).
·Must have made a truly exceptional contribution in their community.
Eligible candidates must submit a completed application form, a one-page essay outlining their voluntary contributions to the community, reference letter(s) from the community organization, reference letter from a teacher, counselor or principal including information confirming full-time attendance and academic standing, and a photocopy of a birth certificate or other document providing proof of age.
Sampson added: ?We know there are hundreds of student volunteers out there and we ask them to share with us the good work they are doing in their communities.?
