Delivering Improved Training Access to Northern B.C.

Northern British Columbia?s economy is growing ? business is thriving, unemployment rates are dropping and the future looks bright. In order for employers and workers to benefit from this economic growth, Trade Routes is making training more accessible by bringing skills training to rural and Aboriginal communities without ready access to a post-secondary institution.

About Trade Routes

Trade Routes is a state-of-the-art mobile training facility that will provide exploratory trades training, apprenticeship technical training and journeyperson upgrading in northern British Columbia communities.

Trade Routes is a self-contained classroom in a 53-foot-long trailer that can accommodate classes of up to 12 students per session. The unit features welding equipment, drill presses, and a host of other equipment and tools to provide students with hands-on training in a variety of trades, including:

? Electrical

? Pipefitting/steamfitting

? Plumbing

? Welding

? Millwright

Vehicle Features

? Expandable trailer sides that convert trailer to an 1,100-square-foot technical training classroom in 15 minutes;

? State-of-the-art wireless tool inventory system;

? Self-seeking satellite system, enabling remote instruction by subject matter experts;

? Two self-powered, energy-efficient generator sets; and

? An electric, roof-top heating system for quick snow melt and interior climate control, including back-up diesel injected heaters to offset outside temperatures below -40 C.

Trade Routes is operated by the Industry Training Authority, with input from a stakeholder steering committee. The ITA is a provincial government agency, mandated to manage, expand and improve B.C.?s industry training system. Further information on the ITA can be found at

Trade Routes is currently booked for a range of community training initiatives until November 2008, at which time a long term strategy for its continued use in northern B.C will be established.

The Tumbler Ridge Chamber of Commerce will host this initiative in Tumbler Ridge on May 8 for an all day session. Everyone is welcome to check out the big trailers that will be parked beside the cab oose on Southgate.
