Delivery of the 2006 Census begins

OTTAWA (May 2, 2006) – Starting today, households across the country begin receiving their 2006 Census questionnaires.

In urban areas, Census forms will be delivered by Canada Post, while in rural areas, census enumerators will once again drop off questionnaires to each household.

Census Day is May 16, but Statistics Canada is asking all Canadians to complete their forms as soon as they can. This can be done online at or by using the more traditional method of dropping the completed form in the mail.

The online option is new for 2006. For the first time, respondents may choose to fill in their forms via the Internet and Statistics Canada is encouraging everyone to take advantage of this easy, fast and secure method of enumeration.

The Census of Canada takes place every five years. More than a simple population count, the Census provides data that are used by governments at all levels to make important policy decisions and to plan programs and services for the future.
