Yellowknife, NT (May 9, 2005) – The Workers? Compensation Board of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut congratulates Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. for winning the John T. Ryan Safety Trophy for the second year in a row. Diavik was named the regional winner of the select mines category in Western Canada.

In the select mines category for 2004, Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. won the Regional Trophy with an impressive low Lost Time Injury frequency. Diavik was up against mines from the four western provinces and the three territories.

?All the staff and employees at Diavik are to be congratulated for their effort and commitment in safety. To win this safety award in two consecutive years is a remarkable achievement. Diavik continues to set a very high safety standard for the diamond mining industry in Canada,? says Sylvester Wong, WCB?s Chief Inspector of Mines.

The prestigious John T. Rvan Safety Trophy was first awarded in 1941 when the Mine Safety Appliances Company of Canada, now MSA Canada Inc., donated a torphy to encourage safe production of minerals as part of Canada?s waretime effort. Since then, the competition has been expanded to include a coal trophy in 1942 and a select mine trophy in 1970. These much treasured trophies are symbols of the premiere safety competition in Canada?s mining industry.
