To kick off Fire Prevention Week this year, the Tumbler Ridge Fire Department supplied every student at Tumbler Ridge Elementary with a new smoke alarm to have installed in their home. Smoke alarms have been mandatory with the construction of any new homes in BC since 1979, and, as of May 1, 2010, any homes built before 1979 were also required by law to have smoke alarms installed. On average, one person dies every day in a fire in Canada, with 75 percent of those deaths occurring in residences. The National Fire Protection Association calculates that the chances of dying in a fire are cut in half by having a properly functioning smoke alarm in the home.
Smoke Alarms Save Lives!! Please ensure that yours has new batteries, is tested monthly, and is replaced when it is more than ten years old.
