On Saturday, July 23rd Hartford Gardens was dedicated in honour of Janet Hartford who has been an outstanding resident of Tumbler Ridge since its founding in 1983. Janet is an original member of the Garden Club and helped plan the garden. Mayor Iles, the Honourable Jay Hill and Dr. Charles Helm joined Brian Bray and the Tumbler Ridge Choral Society in celebrating this occasion with Janet and the Garden Club. The Honourable Blair Lekstrom sent his regrets and had Mayor Iles speak a few words on his behalf. Many residents also attended. The plaque was unveiled. Everyone enjoyed cake at the conclusion of the event.
The Garden Club purchases any shrubs or trees and annuals and perennials, plants and weeds and waters the gardens. We also purchased the Eagle and many times we get donations like the willow basket and the benches. The District Public Works cuts the grass and trims for us. They also built the shed which we are ever so grateful.
The Lion?s Club had a great BBQ providing hot dogs and hamburgers and beverages.
The Garden Club?s annual garden tour with 19 gardens was held in the afternoon. Beautiful gardens were exhibited. The persons exhibiting their gardens had toured the gardens on Tuesday night. On Saturday, despite the cool weather and the threat of rain 29 people toured the gardens, some even from Fort St. John and some from Delta. They voted on which gardens they preferred overall. This, of course, was a very difficult task with such wonderful gardens in the tour. The first prize is Glen and Lyn Miller at 167 Gwillam; the second prize goes to Roy and Jane Phillips at 207 Willow Drive; the third prize was a tie and goes to Ken and Ida Dannish at 172 Gwillam and Brenda and Lorne Harris at 140 Sukunka. The special chair?s prize goes to 139 Meikle, Diane and John who have only been in Tumbler Ridge a year and have made a wonderful effort in their front and back gardens.
There was a draw for those who went on the tour and the prize was donated by the Tumbler Ridge Inn gift shop. It was a beautiful stained glass wall hanging. The winner was Patsy Antle and I wanted it but I couldn?t even enter the draw !!
Thank you to all the people who assisted in making this a wonderful day including the District employees who provided the table and chairs, Cheryl and the employees at the Community Centre who took entry forms, Clark Hazelhurst and the Public Works employees who always make the garden look so nice and who mounted the plaque, the dignitaries, Mayor Iles, the Honourable Jay Hill, and Dr. Charles Helm, Brian Bray and company, Dawn Wagner and the Choral Society, the Tumbler Ridge News for publishing all our Garden Club news, Heinz Sager and his garage, the many Garden Club members especially the planters, weeders and waterers, those who volunteered to show their gardens and especially those who took the time to come out and enjoy the day. Most importantly we would like to thank Janet and George Hartford and their son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren and their daughter for making the day special. We appreciate it. Until next year. This event was funded by the District of Tumbler Ridge. We would like to thank the District for this funding.
