Chad McDowell is a level two coach with 15 years gymnastic experience in all disciplines. Having run two successful camps this summer in Tumbler Ridge he has made the decision to offer his skills to our community.
McDowell says; ?I began coaching Fort St. John where I coached for a few years in the 90?s. I took 2 years of a PhysEd degree in Grande Prairie then moved to Canmore, where I coached for a year. I have also coached in Banff, and at different clubs in Calgary.
I moved back to Fort St. John in the spring of 2008 and coached for another year, acting in the roles of the Gym Tot coordinator as well as Men?s coordinator. I also designed the Li?l Development program, which was a program for five year olds, who wanted an early start into competitive style training, to be future competitive gymnasts.?
McDowell has registered Tumbler Ridge Gymnastics with Gymnastics BC, and that organization is pleased to see the club starting again, after a hiatus of about six years.
The gymnastics equipment in town, located in the Tumbler Ridge Elementary School, is still usable with only a few pieces of equipment that will need modernization. The vault needs replacing, as it does not meet Federal International Gymnastics (FIG) regulations but is expensive at around $7000, which is not in the budget. The ideal floor is a spring floor, which has less impact on the kids? bodies.
The gymnastics program will fit in well with Tumbler Ridge?s willingness to become a healthy community. For example, the Community Centre?s program for 2009 for Inactive Citizens encourages residents to live healthier lifestyles.
McDowell is looking for volunteers and for parents interested in forming a Board. He will be at Mass Registration on September 15th. McDowell can be reached at email@example.com or call him at 250-257-1234. Plans are for classes to start on the 22nd of September.
