The Northern BC Winter Games will soon be upon Dawson Creek and hopefully there will be great benefits from having such an event so close to us. The grand opening of the games took place on October 23, 2004 at the Dawson Mall and a torch lighting ceremony brought runners in on November 27th. The runners were a representative of each participating sport and began at Pioneer Circle, ending at NAR Park where the torch remains lit. The Winter Games take place on February 4 through the 6th and not only will it be exciting to witness the athletes first-hand but also that this kind of platform brings with it many other opportunities.
On a previous weekend in November, Tumbler Ridge (TR) hosted a Pee Wee hockey tournament and the TR/Hudson?s Hope Ice Dogs won the title to represent the BC Northern Winter Games. The battle for that was between FSJ, Clearview and TR/Hudson Hope. As hosts of the Winter Games, Dawson Creek will also represent the Peace Region at the Winter Games alongside the Ice Dogs. As in the past, a combined team of 8 Tumbler Ridge players and 8 Hudson Hope players formed to become The Ice Dogs. This was a result of both communities having the same issue of not enough kids for full teams and possibly missing out on Canada?s favorite winter sport. Everyone is welcome to come out and support the Minor Hockey League by cheering them on, especially when in-town.
