The weekend of February 5–6 was a busy one for students and staff at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. The grade 7–8 girls basketball team coached by Alecia Irvine were in Dawson Creek playing one game Friday and two on Saturday. The girls worked hard but lost all games to stiff competition from Dawson Creek and Fort St. John. Thank you to Miss Cadwell for being the teacher sponsor.

The senior boys and girls traveled to Ridgevalley, Alberta. Our girls played well but came up empty handed in their three games. The girls would like to thank Mrs. Proulx and Mrs. Davies for coaching this season.

The boys won their first game Friday against High Level 64–36 and lost their second to the Ridgevalley Raiders 75–66.

After a restful sleep at the Chateau Ridgevalley (classroom floor) the boys won their game against the St. Mary Saints 60 – 41. This put the Kodiaks into the final for another match against the hometown Raiders.

The Raiders jumped out to a quick lead and substituted freely as they had 14 players and tried to wear down the six boys from TR. The Kodiaks fought back thanks to a great effort by Ivan Maligaya and Braydon Miller who scored 36 and 19 points respectively. After numerous lead changes the Kodiaks were victorious with a score of 61–59. The boys extend a huge thank you to our girl’s team for cheering them on to victory!

The boys next see action February 17–20 when they travel to Burns Lake to compete in a 12-team zone tournament. The boys will be ranked in the middle of the pack hoping for a top two finish in order to qualify for provincials and a trip to Langley in March.

Our girls’ season will wrap up February 24–27 when they are the hosts for the 11-team zone competition. Come out to the local gym and see some great action and support our local team.
