The Tumbler Ridge Secondary School boy’s basketball team traveled to Burns Lake on Wednesday February 17 for an eleven-team zone competition.
Our zone is the biggest in the province stretching from the Alberta border to Burns Lake and Fort Nelson to Bella Coola. The top two teams would qualify for provincials in Langley during the second week of March.
Wednesday evening, after a close to eight hour bus ride, the boys beat a young team from Mackenzie.
Their next game was Thursday against Acwsalcta from Bella Coola and the boys played well and managed their second win. The Burns Lake team organized a three point shooting contest in the evening and our own Braydon Miller was named the “three point King” for the zone after eliminating two shooters from each team.
On Friday we lost to a very strong team from Ron Pettigrew Christian School of Dawson Creek. The RPCS Lions went on to win the tournament in decisive fashion. Saturday morning saw us playing Northside Christian from Vanderhoof and the Kodiaks received their second loss – eliminating any chance of heading to provincials. Later that evening we beat Acwsalcta again in a fun filled consolation game.
TRSS’s point guard, Ivan Maligaya, received recognition for his high level of play by being named to the first all-star team. Also during the four days of competition, all players in the tournament voted for their favourite player. The criterion was based on who was the nicest, most fun to play against, most fun to watch player in the tournament. Out of approximately 120 players, Ivan was awarded this prestigious honour. He received a basketball autographed by the 11-team captains.
The zone tournament concludes competitive play for the Kodiaks. They will have two more games in March against Peace Christian School in Chetwynd. Special thanks to community coach Steve Sperger for coaching the boys and his commitment to helping kids with basketball in Tumbler Ridge.
A reminder that the TRSS girls are playing host to the best girls teams in the zone this weekend. Games start Wednesday February 24 and conclude Saturday February 27. The top three teams from this tournament will advance to the provincials.
