Letter To The Editor

We find the need to write this letter to clarify what PALS does for this community.

We collect refundable containers to mainly help seniors/families on a fixed low income with EMERGENCY Vet bills that are our main objective. We also help with medication costs, free loan of travel containers, and supply pet food for our local food bank. We are big supporters of the Dawson Creek SPCA as they serve out town?s requirements regarding animals.

We are not encouraging people to acquire pets on the assumption that PALS will pay for shots etc. If you are on a fixed income and have the opportunity of being given a pet it is up to you to make sure you can look after this animal or seek help from those that bought or gave you the pet in the first place. Owning a pet is a responsibility and emergency medical needs can arise out of no where as we all know. Many responsible residents have used our funding and show their appreciation in donations of refundable empties or donations of other items or just a good old-fashioned thank you. It has come to our attention that people are being told to go ahead and acquire said pet as PALS will pay for cost incurred, not so.

Shirley and I maintain this PALS projects ourselves with help of residents and some businesses donating empties. Just one emergency vet bill can be $500. I have worked this out to us having to collect, sort and cash in over 7,000 pieces just to pay this one bill. I have no problem with this as that is our main goal. If you have a pet and need our help, we will do what we can to help you. To assume that one can acquire a pet thinking we will pay for all the initial costs, like vaccinations etc that is not so. We have done this in some isolated incidents in the past but now is being taken advantage of. I hope we have not offended anyone but this is purely volunteer work done on Shirley?s time and mine. It is by no means a small project and funding must be kept for emergency care. If anyone has a situation and is not sure if they qualify they are welcome to call and discuss with Shirley or myself as our service is confidential.
