On June 24th, local resident Dan Golob was recognized as the ?Volunteer of the Year? for his dedication to the South Peace Junior Soccer program. Golob was presented with this award by South Peace Junior Soccer President Mike Bernier during the weekend wrap up festivities in Dawson Creek. He received two trophies with his name and recognition for his volunteer efforts on them.
Golob, who has been coaching soccer for 22 years, said that he ?enjoys the challenges that coaching offers. It is very satisfying to see the kids improve over the season and that you have been able to contribute to their successes.? When asked why he didn?t coach in Tumbler Ridge this season, he responded, ?I wanted to give a different opportunity for my son to play soccer this year and by playing a larger center, this would be possible.?
Golob was commuting to Dawson Creek with his son Eric since April three to four times per week in order to help coach the U-10 house and U-12 rep teams. Golob said that the rep teams played very well against some of the stronger and more experienced teams within the region.
There were 1000 children registered for the 2007 season for the South Peace Region with 85 coaches.
