Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

In the past I have been an active member of both unions involved in this dispute with HD Mining as well as a couple of others. I spent 46 years in the mining, construction and logging industries and I do not see what the unions are doing here as being positive.

I always believed the union’s job was to support workers, to help workers gain safe working conditions, decent wages and a decent standard of living. That, however, does not seem to be what is happening here. I believe the unions should be welcoming these temporary workers and making sure once they get here that they are properly looked after.

Not only are the unions making it look like there is a bit of racism involved here, but they have threatened the future of our community. It might just be possible that the miners may become dedicated dues paying members.

I have lived here for 30 years and am very disappointed to see what has been happening to this town in the last few months.
