Despite the cold, wet weather, Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees #2979 showed up to support striking Health Employee Union workers Tuesday, April 27th. Jackie Inkpen said, ?We were shocked when they (CUPE members) pulled up during their half hour lunch to picket with us.?
Hospital Employees Union workers went on strike Sunday at noon. Workers claim that health employers and the BC government are demanding more than 100 pages of concessions that include wage cuts and reduced benefits while lay offs continue. Striking worker Mimi Greengrass said, ?We are just trying to protect what we have. We aren?t asking for more.?
Marg Wheeler, another striking HEU worker said, ?we are surprised at how supportive people have been to us. We have had people bring us coffee and donuts, people drive by and honk, and lots of people just stop by to talk to us.?
For now people are asked to use the side entrance for Doctor visits.
