FORT NELSON ? Two learners from the Fort Nelson campus of Northern Lights College are recipients of awards from the Minerva Foundation of B.C.
Sandra St. Pierre was the recipient of the Minerva Foundation of B.C. Women Award (Aboriginal), while Ericka Castillo received the Minerva Foundation of B.C. Women Award. Both recipients are enrolled in Adult Basic Education programs at the College?s Fort Nelson campus.
Both women were presented with their $1,250 awards in January. But they recently met with Minerva Foundation chair Jeanne Douglas, who is based in Vancouver, on Sept. 27 in Fort Nelson. She presented Minerva Foundation vests to each of the recipients.
Douglas was in Fort Nelson for a community forum, which included an overview of the Minerva Foundation and its programs. The Minerva Foundation co-hosted the event with EnCana and the College, a partner institution with the Education Awards program.
As a result of the forum, the goal now is to form a women?s group in Fort Nelson. Already in the discussion stages is a mid-winter women?s retreat weekend.
The mission of the Minerva Foundation is to inspire and empower women and girls to reach their full potential by creating opportunities and offering programs through trusted partnerships in the areas of education, leadership development, economic security, and safety.
For more information on the Minerva awards, students should contact the Financial Aid Clerk at the College campus at which they are registered.
