Tumbler Ridge RCMP have identified the wreckage of a plane, located 74 Kilometres Southwest of Tumbler Ridge, as that of a Cessna 180 that went missing in 1965. Today, Friday, July 23rd, RCMP investigators and members of BC Coroners Service along with an investigator from the Transport Safety Board attended the scene.
Police became aware of the wreckage on July 20th, when two men who had been on an ATV expedition discovered the wreckage. The crash sight is in an extremely mountainous and rugged area. The men travelled for eleven hours through the rough terrain to reach help. They subsequently provided the GPS coordinates of the crash sight.
The Transportation Safety Board will be conducting a file review to determine where the Cessna was travelling from in 1965, where it?s destination was and who the occupants were.
RCMP investigators are requesting that the two men who initially discovered the crash sight contact the Tumbler Ridge RCMP.
