Buy a cupcake help a pet. What a great concept. This was the idea behind National Cupcake Day, put on by the SPCA.

Locally, Dina Janzen’s curiosity was peaked when she read about the fundraiser in the community newspaper. She then did some research online and decided this would be a great was to raise some money for a great cause and have some fun!

This was Janzen’s first time organizing a fundraiser and she says it wasn’t that difficult to get organized especially with the overwhelming amount of help offered to make the cupcakes. She says there were about 12 people who offered up their baking skills and around 200 cupcakes were made with care.

Selling all these goodies seemed like a task however Janzen says, “I didn’t realize it would go over so well!”

No one could resist and after only about 50 minutes, all of the cupcakes were devoured!

Dina also incorporated an online option to support the cupcake day and so far she has raised about $540. She says, “I called the SPCA to ask if the money could go to our local SPCA, but they said the fund will be going to which ever branch needed it the most in BC.”

She is happy to be supporting any SPCA.

The fundraiser has already surpassed it’ll goal of $150,000 and is up to $176,629.

National Cupcake Day is the first-ever, coordinated Canadian event to support local shelters, SPCAs, and Humane Societies. Even though this event is new in Canada, it has a long, successful history in other countries around the world, namely in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

Janzen was very happy and is excited to make cupcake day an annual event in Tumbler Ridge. She has some great ideas for next year including a cupcake decorating table, longer hours, games and of course, more cupcakes!
