Northern Health advises Northern businesses to watch for unauthorized “Healing Hands” book donation request

Northern Health has received reports of a company allegedly soliciting donations from Quesnel businesses on behalf of GR Baker Hospital for a “Healing Hands” book to be donated to children in the hospital.

NH would like to advise businesses in Quesnel and others across the region that the health authority has not authorized this solicitation. In fact, GR Baker Hospital has not received copies of these alleged books.

Northern Health greatly appreciates the work of local health and hospital foundations, hospital auxiliaries, and other charitable organizations whose work supports health projects and health services delivery in Northern BC. NH advises businesses receiving phone calls requesting donations to check very carefully about the origin of such solicitations before making a donation.

In late 2003, the US Federal Trade Commission ruled against a company engaged in a similar solicitation, and provided suggestions on how to deal with charitable solicitations. More details on that ruling is available at http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2003/12/dpspublishing.htm
