Ten students from Tumbler Ridge Secondary have been sponsored by the high school to take the Transition to Work program at Northern Lights College from February 13 to June 30, 2006. They are now on the first part of their third unit which is three weeks of work experience in the community. The local businesses have been very accommodating for the students. They are working at Shop Easy, Peoples, Shell, True Value, Vinnie?s and Sheila?s Place. The educational community has also been receptive as two students are working at Northern Lights College and another is working at Tumbler Ridge Elementary. Here the students have a chance to use the skills they learned in the first two units:
Communication in the Workplace and Professionalism in the Workplace.
They will also be learning how to take instructions and criticism and
how to get along with co-workers. They must keep a daily journal on
their experience and will do a self-evaluation when the unit is over.
The employer will evaluate them on several aspects on the job such as use of working time, initiative, personal appearance, attendance and attitude. This unit will allow them to get some work experience which they can use on a resume when they are actively searching for a summer job or a career when they finish school. A huge ?Thank You? to all those sponsors who have students on work experience. If you wish any more information, call Sherry at 242-5591.
