August 13, 2009, Today the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) was pleased to present a cheque in the amount of $116,528.00 to Alberta Shock Trauma Rescue Society (STARS) represented by Dr. Gregory Powell – President & Chief Executive Officer, Glenda Farnden – Major Gifts Manager, Linda Powell – Vice President of Governance & External Affairs, and Andy Stewart – Grande Prairie Base Manager and Pilot for STARS, to support their efforts to provide safe, rapid rotary critical care transport to critically injured and ill Northern residents.
STARS is a non-profit charitable organization who provides for the care and transport of critically ill and injured individuals through the use of highly skilled medical providers and aviation personnel using state-of-the art medical equipment and helicopters. STARS provides a valuable resource to the emergency service providers currently operating in the PRRD. Since opening the STARS Grande Prairie Base in 2006, they have received 39 calls for service within the Peace River Regional District. Of these, STARS completed 25 missions to assist the injured and ill as a result of industrial, recreational, and motor vehicle accidents in addition to providing crucial facility to facility transportation of stroke, sepsis, trauma, and medical patients in our Region. STARS made a presentation to the PRRD in January requesting regional funding support similar to local government partners in Alberta. The PRRD agreed to fund $2.00 per capita to ensure the delivery of this lifesaving service in the Peace. The Peace River Regional District is proud to be a partner in supporting this service for all PRRD residents. Karen Goodings, Chair
