The weekend you’ve been waiting for (or dreading) has finally arrived.
It’s Grizfest weekend, and the calendar is packed with events.
Festivities get underway on Friday, with the Battle of the Bands and Vocalist Competition. This is a free event, featuring some of the best young (and not so young) talent out of the Peace region.
Each band and vocalist will be performing two songs, either originals or covers. The first place winner of the vocalist competition wins $500, and a chance to perform Saturday at 12:30. The winner of the band competition gets $1000, and performs Sunday at 1:30.
Saturday gets underway with the Lions’ pancake breakfast, starting at 8 am and running until 11. At 11, the annual Grizfest parade gets underway. Chamber manager Carmen Drapeau says this is the third year that the Chamber has looked after the parade. “While there was some discussion about shortening the route, it will be the same for this year,” she says. “It’s definitely affected because of the mine closures, but we’re getting more nonprofits.”
This year, she says, the theme is “Recreation Rocks,” a nod to the local Geopark. “A few groups will be going in together, to combine their efforts,” she says. “The museum is going to be doing something with the Gardening society, for instance. It makes less work for everyone.”
Drapeau says she loves judging the parade. “It’s cool to see the creativity. The amount of work some of them put into this is phenomenal.”
The Grizfest grounds open at 12 pm, with the vocal winner taking the stage at 12:30. In addition to the events happening on stage, expect to see horseshoes, the kid’s carnival, facepainting, and, on Sunday, the Sunrise golf tournament.
Headlining Sunday will be Theory of A Deadman, a Canadian hard rock band from Delta, British Columbia,
Theory of A Deadman became the first act to sign with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger’s 604 Records imprint in 2001.
Their debut album, Theory of A Deadman, was released in September 2002. The name of the band comes from a song off their first album, whose lyrics describe a man preparing to commit suicide. They followed up with the release of Gasoline, was released in March 2005, Scars & Souvenirs in April 2008, The Truth Is… in July 2011 and Savages released in July 2014. In April 2015, Theory released a five track acoustic EP titled Angel.
Theory of a Deadman has performed here once before, at Grizfest 2008, and were a crowd favourite.
And for those looking for a different perspective on the event, Ridge Rotors will be offering helicopter rides from 1-4 each day.
