Public Meeting Planned On Community Centre Upgrade

The District of Tumbler Ridge is holding a public information meeting on Wednesday, May 28 to update residents on plans to upgrade the mechanical system at the Community Centre.

District of Tumbler Ridge Council is proposing to borrow $2,286,804 over a 15year term to finance an upgrade of the facility?s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system as well as the refrigeration plant. The session begins at 7 p.m. in Rooms 4&5 of the Community Centre.

?This facility is a focal point in the community and we want residents to come out and see our plans to help this venue continue serving us well into the future,? says Mayor Mike Caisley. ?We look forward to citizens coming to this meeting and having input on this important project.?

The plan is subject to adoption of the Community Centre Mechanical Systems Upgrades Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 542. A copy of the bylaw was available for viewing at the District of Tumbler Ridge Office as of Monday. It is also online at www.tumblerridge.ca

Council would adopt the bylaw unless 10 per cent or more of the electors within the District indicate a referendum must be held as per terms of the Alternative Approval Process, introduced in January 2004. If less than 10 per cent of the electorate, or 191 people request a referendum, the bylaw will deemed approved and the District can proceed with adopting the bylaw.

Residents can request a referendum on the bylaw by submitting a signed Elector Response Form no later than 4:30 p.m. on June 20, 2008. Only people qualifying as electors, either residents or nonresident property electors, are eligible. Resident electors will be Canadian citizens, have reached 18 years of age, lived in B.C. at least six months and resided in Tumbler Ridge for a minimum 30 days. For nonresident property electors, the same criteria applies, plus they must have had registered title to a property in the District of Tumbler Ridge for at least the past 30 days.

Elector response forms are available at the District Office at 305 Founders Street, Tumbler Ridge, or on the website. They may be submitted to the Corporate Officer in person or via mail.
