On Friday, August 21 at 3:03 AM the Dawson Creek RCMP were notified of a two vehicle accident on Highway 97 North at the intersection of Mason and Sweetwater Road.
A blue 2004 Dodge Quadcab pickup was northbound on Highway 97 and indicated that it was turning left onto the Mason Road. A loaded B-Train was following the pickup and was in the process of passing the pickup on the right side. The pickup abruptly decided not to turn left, but instead decided to turn right onto the Sweetwater RD. The pickup began its right turn and was broadsided by the tractor-trailer unit, instantly killing all three occupants. The driver of the semi received minor scratches, was treated at the hospital and released.
The deceased were two females age 38 and 18 and one 30 year old male. All were from Fort St. John, BC. No names are being released at this point as the next of kin have not all been notified as of yet.
The Criminal Crash Investigation Team were called out along with the accident reconstructionist to investigate the collision. The matter is still under investigation and when additional information becomes available, it will be shared at that time.
In 2009 there have been four collisions resulting in eight deaths on South Peace Roadways.
Alcohol was a contributing factor in this crash.
