The Ridge Ramble Biathlon, Tumbler Ridge?s summer cycling and running event, is now in its 17th year. Organized by the Wolverine Nordic and Mountain Society, it takes off on Saturday June 3rd on the streets of Tumbler Ridge, beginning and ending near the Skate Park (corner of Monkman and Northgate).
Entry fee is $5.00, and registration opens at 8-15 on the morning of the race. Medals are presented to the first three finishers in each category. Kids start at 9 am, adults at 10 am. Kids cycle 4 km and run 2km on an out and back course, and their race is divided into 7 and under, 8-10, and 11-15 age groups. The District of Tumbler Ridge has agreed that the route for the kids? race will be closed briefly to traffic to enhance safety.
Adults cycle 10 km and run 5 km on a circular route. In all categories there are individual male and female divisions, as well as team events with one member riding and the other running.
2005 was the first time the Biathlon was held on a shorter route (previously it was 20 km cucle and 10 km run) and the new route was well received, with praise for the wide newly paved streets which provide a great cycling and running surface.
This is WNMS?s longest-running event and is ideal for family participation. Record numbers have been turning out weekly at the Monday evening Flatbed Loops exercise sessions, which should translate into a large field for the Biathlon, hopefully augmented by out of town competitors.
