School Curling Bonspiel a success

A total of 120 students from Tumbler Ridge Elementary and Tumbler Ridge Senior Secondary took part in a two-day curling bonspiel on January 30th and 31st at the Tumbler Ridge Curling Club. Students from Mrs. Bell?s grade 4/5 class, Mr. Greengrass? grade 5/6 class, Mrs. Kennedy?s grade 5/6 class, and Miss Every?s girls? grade 7/8 gym classes went head to head in the culmination of a month-long unit on learning to curl.

Each team of 4 students played anywhere from 5 to 8 short games, about 20 minutes each, and counted up their total points scored. The event was sponsored by the Tumbler Ridge Curling Club, which took donations from its members to buy door prizes. Gift certificates were also donated by One Stop Video Shop and Vinnie?s Videos. Every student came away with a prize, as well as improved knowledge in the sport of curling. The bonspiel was very well organized, and thanks go out to the patient teachers, the parent volunteers, the members of the curling club who donated their time to help, and the T.R. Curling Club for allowing the students to use the ice and equipment.

There were four trophies, donated by T.R. Building Supplies, which will be awarded at the next student assembly. They are for the best overall team, the most improved team, the most sportsmanlike female curler, and the most sportsmanlike male curler.

Lots of fun was had by all, and there are some great junior curlers in Tumbler Ridge.
