Thanks to volunteer effort and corporate donations, significant improvements are being made to the athletics track, around the soccer field below TRSS. The Wolverine Nordic and Mountain Society (WMNS) has spearheaded this project, aided by funds given to Tumbler Ridge by the True Sport movement.
So as to improve the grass track, overseeding has taken place with seed that will provide an excellent surface for running and race walking. David Wall of Premier Pacific Seeds provided the seed at half price, and it was shipped up from Vancouver. Once at Dawson Creek it was shipped at no cost to WNMS thanks to in-kind donations from Peace River Coal and Smokee Blue Resources (Aldwin Miller). Birgit Sharman saw to it that the track area had newly painted lines, using the District?s line marker. Chad Lundgard of Peace Pro Seeds then donated his time and equipment and took his harrow to the track, while Kevin Sharman did the seeding.
The weather co-operated, being windless, dry and hot on the seeding day, followed by a week of soaking rain. Already the seed is beginning to sprout. Thanks to this wonderful combined effort, the athletics facilities in Tumbler Ridge are continuing to improve, for the benefit of athletes and walkers of all ages.
