George and Janet Hartford came to Tumbler Ridge from Dawson Creek as the streets were being planned and the schools not yet opened. Both of them were schoolteachers and taught the combined grades of 8-12.
But they have done incredible things and showed unbelievable dedication and commitment to the enhancement of Tumbler Ridge and the programs and organizations that are now staples in the community.
Mrs. Hartford has been instrumental in dozens of organizations too numerous to mention. Her contribution to Arts Council, The Hospital Foundation and countless others has been the driving force behind their success, She brought Ten Thousand Villages to town, an opportunity to purchase beautiful and unique artisans creations from third world nations. A helping hand in every sense.
Mr. Hartford has had several career paths, most notably as Mayor. George also writes a regular column for this newspaper. ?By George? is a light hearted look at the community, and our life and times.
The Hartfords are highly regarded and respected in Tumbler Ridge, with every right to be so. In 2003 a garden area beside the caboose was dedicated to Janet Hartford by the Garden Club and is maintained by the volunteer group.
The Hartfords have four children, Nichola, Crosbie, Robert and Douglas. Two of their grandchildren, Kyla and Darby, reside in Tumbler Ridge with parents Rob and Juanita. We thank George and Janet Hartford for their outstanding contributions to Tumbler Ridge.
