Track & Field Athletes Qualify for BC Summer Games
Wednesday July 07, 2010 Four athletes from Tumbler Ridge Secondary School have qualified to compete at the BC Summer Games in Langley from July 22nd to 25th in Track & Field. They will be representing the Cariboo-North East Zone. The athletes qualified at the Spruce Capital track and field meet in Prince George in mid-June by finishing in the top two in their events.
Diana Smith will be competing in the 1500m racewalk, an event she started training for this year and has improved tremendously in. Aaron Wylie qualified in discus, and is excited to see what his results will be after some recent training sessions with throwing coach Max Legault. Laura Sharman will be competing in the 80m hurdles and long jump, and did very well in these events at the provincial high school meet. Keenan Render qualified in both high jump, one of his favourite events, as well as the 200m hurdles which is a new event to him but one in which he shows lots of potential. TRSS track coaches Linda Helm and Birgit Sharman will continue their training sessions with these athletes through the month of July.
The BC Summer Games are held every other summer, and athletes in track and field can only qualify once, in the year they are in grade 8 or grade 9. Other sports at the Games will include baseball, basketball, cycling, swimming, volleyball, and many more. Diana, Aaron, Laura and Keenan are very excited to be flying to Langley with the other athletes from the Zone to be a part of this great event. They will also be joined by Jared Wylie, a grade 7 student who qualified to compete in golfing at the Games.
