Monthly Fire Department Report
Mathew Treit, Fire Chief Wednesday July 14, 2010 Now that the nicer weather is here, many people wish to enjoy campfires in their backyards or while camping. Within the town site of Tumbler Ridge, including the campground at Flatbed Creek, the following guidelines are to be followed for campfires. Campfires may only be on private property unless otherwise authorized, and may be not more than one meter in diameter. (There is now new provincial legislation which has reduced the size of campfires to 0.5 meters. For the time being, within the town site of Tumbler Ridge, campfires up to one meter in diameter are still acceptable. At Flatbed Campground, the fires are to be within the receptacles provided.) The fire pit must be permanent and dug down into the ground to the mineral soil, and fire spread is to be contained by a non-combustible barrier around the circumference of the fire. The fire pit is to be located 3 meters from any combustible materials including buildings, fences, vegetation etc., and there is to be no material hanging over the fire pit. The material being burned is not to be more than 50 centimetres in height and is not to contain any noxious material such as synthetic substances, treated wood or liquid fuel etc. A means of extinguishing the fire must be available at all times, and the fire must be continually attended by an adult while it is burning and then be completely extinguished. Campfires are not permitted when a campfire ban is in effect. There are now three locations where campfire ban information will be posted: on Highway 29 near Flatbed Campground, on Highway 52 North near the junction with Mackenzie Way, and at the fire hall itself. If any further information is required, please contact the fire hall at 250-242-3939. For information on burning regulations outside of the town site of Tumbler Ridge, please contact the BC Ministry of Forests.
The month of June saw the Tumbler Ridge Fire Department respond to thirteen emergencies. These included seven First Responder calls, four reports of ringing fire alarms, one vehicle fire, and one vehicle accident. Practices in the month of June included training with structural protection units, embankment rescue, pumps and pumping, First Responders and the setting up and operation of the fireworks display.
Congratulations to Deputy Diana Vandale, and Firefighters Dustin Curry and Brandon Braam who achieved 100% attendance at training for the month. Congratulations also to Firefighters Dwayne Fry and Chuck Landa who have completed their first year of service on the fire department. Firefighter Scott Beattie also celebrated a birthday in the month of June. The Tumbler Ridge firefighters would like to welcome Kevin Alarie to the department and we wish him all the best with our organization. The membership currently stands at 17 and we still need new members, so if you are of good character, work well as part of a team and have a positive attitude towards training, we would like to hear from you.
You can stop by the hall or call the office at 242-3939 for more information.
