Peace River Coal and WNMS Cooperate on Babcock Falls Trail
Wednesday July 14, 2010 | Jessica Labelle, Peace River Coal environmental staff, takes a break from trail work to admire Babcock Falls.
Kevin Sharman, July 2010 | The trail to Babcock Falls, south of Tumbler Ridge, is a scenic walk to a picturesque waterfall. The falls is located near Peace River Coal’s Trend Mine, and environment personnel from the mine use part of the trail to access a water sampling site. The trail has become overgrown lately, so after discussing the need for trail work with Wolverine Nordic and Mountain Society secretary Charles Helm, four people from the environment department of PRC cleared the brush along the trail in late June. Kevin Sharman, the head of PRC’s environment department, said “We are happy to maintain this trail, because it helps our personnel, local hikers, and the increasing number of visitors using these trails. Volunteers from the WNMS already have their hands full maintaining their many other trails, so we decided to help out.” Dr. Helm commented “We appreciate the assistance provided by Peace River Coal in enhancing one of the area’s classic waterfall destinations.” Other work included repainting the trail markers and placing a sign at the falls.
