Success by 6 launches in Tumbler Ridge

Success By 6 (SB6) had it?s first meeting in the public library with it?s council of partners after two years of planning. Michelle Burton. librarian and Joanne Ferrari, children?s programs, have been working with Heidy Kux-Kardos to help make the SB6 program come to life.

The lead partners for SB6 are The Lake View Credit Union, the United Way, which will administer funds and The Ministry of Children and Family Development. The lead partners have been together since 2003 and have reached over 150 communities.

Success By 6 is a program designed to help parents and caregivers prepare children for school by the age of six.

In School District #59 37% of children are not ready for kindergarten, putting them behind in class before they even start.

With the help of SB6 the community will join hands to promote education and good health for our children. Success By 6 will provide different programs for children to help them develop literacy skills, build self confidence and develop social skills so they succeed in school and life.

Families can learn parenting skills, proper nutrition and are provided with access to outreach and cultural programs for total family health.

We will all learn how to keep our town safe by lighting walk ways, cleaning up neighborhoods and developing playgrounds that are safe for children to grown and learn in.

Success By 6 is bringing programs such as The WOW Bus (Words on Wheels) which will be coming to Tumbler Ride once a week. Another program that will be offered is Strong Start Pre-School at the daycare.

Hopefully SB6 will be able to develop a program called Munchkin Land. It is a little people?s real world of bakeries, shops, and houses where children learn what kind of foods to buy, how to keep house and how to go out to a restaurant.

The Tumbler Ridge Library has programs such as Home Alone, Wednesday Club, Story Time, Adult Book Club and many more.

This is a great program bringing families, caregivers and communities together to give our children the foundation for success in their futures.

For more information on the Success By 6 program contact Michelle or Joanne at the Library.

On December 1, 2007 Chris Walker will be at the library to do a dramatic reading of Charles Dickens? ?A Christmas Carol?.

Admission will be by donations for the Christmas Hamper and for the Food Bank which will be opening soon at New Life Assembly, the church on Murray Drive. Food donations must be non-perishable.

Invitations are available now at the library and residents are encouraged to pick them up early so the library can have an idea of how many people will be attending.
