TR Minor Hockey Roundup

The Midget hockey team is coached by Keith Bertrand and Rick David. There are 13 kids (12 boys and 1 girl) on the squad. This season the team is sporting a 6 wins and 3 losses record after 9 games. The team participated in a tournament in Ft St John and another in Grande Prairie. In both cases, they came away with the award for most Sportsmanlike team, as they were the least penalized team in both cases. ?That says a lot in itself?, commented hockey mom Cheryl Hayden. ?For the kids to receive the least amount of penalties in both tournaments is a credit to the character of the team?. The Midgets have home games scheduled for Sunday January 8 and 15 against teams from Ft St John. Their home tournament is Feb 11 and 12.

?This is the first year we have ever had a girls hockey team in Tumbler Ridge?, notes Associate Coach Scott Trim. ?Eleven of the 13 girls have never played organized hockey before?. The girls are on a high learning curve at their twice-weekly practices. They have played the atoms two times and will soon be a tough match for the boys. The girls went to a tournament in Ft St John and played against much more experienced teams. ?The experience was great, and everyone of those girls was ready to go every shift?, notes hockey mom Shelley Leach. Dan Golob and Peter Thomas round out the coaching staff for the girls.

?I?m very happy with the progress of the boys. A good attitude goes a long way?, commented Atoms coach Brian Wylie. The Atoms have teams coming from Mackenzie and Ft Nelson to fill their tournament set for Feb 4 and 5. They finished 3rd overall in the Hudsons Hope tournament earlier in the year, and in second place in the Chetwynd tournament. In exhibition games they sport a record of 2 wins and a loss. ?You will never score if you don?t shoot the puck? adds coach Dan Golob.

The Novice team is coached by Larry Crispin, Ken Kellough, and Paul Payne. They have 11 players between the ages of 5 and 9 years. They have played a couple of games this year and are still working for their first victory. Their big home tournament is Jan 28/29.

?It does the whole organization good to have support in the stands for the home games?, comments hockey mom Sherri Golob. ?So take some time, come on out and cheer our kids on to victory. It means a lot to play in front of cheering a home town crowd?.
