T.R.E.N.D.S and Northern Lights College hosted a Job Fair on Monday Feb 11th at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School (TRSS). Just over 100 people attended, some from as far away as Fort Nelson, to seek out information and jobs. Avalanches and highway closures kept some participants from attending the event.
There was approximately ten tables to chose information from. Some of the companies represented at the Job Fair were: First Coal, Peace River Coal, Ridge Rotors, The Days Inn, Western Canadian Coal, and Lomak,
Jan Legaspi (T.R.E.N.D.S Program Manager), Valerie Cowie (T.R.E.N.D.S Job Coach) and Rochelle Galbraith (Northern Lights College Recruiter for Chetwynd and Hudsons Hope Region) and Patsy Keen (Coordinator/Instructor of Health Care Programs) represented Northern Lights College.
I Spoke with Valerie and asked ?Why T.R.E.N.D.S and Northern Lights College felt the need to host this event?? Valerie indicated that with the closure of some businesses T.R.E.N.D.S wanted to show people that there was still a lot of jobs available in the Tumbler Ridge area.
I asked Gavin Hamblin at the Lomak table, ? Does Lomak hire a lot of personnel from Job Fairs?? Gavin said ?This is Lomak?s first Job Fair in this Region, but it looks to be a good turn out and decision on Lomak?s part.?
Rose Huneault, representing First Coal said ? The turn out has been good and we are collecting resumes for summer positions.?
T.R.E.N.D.S is looking to set up another Job Fair for sometime in May 2008.
