Last year, following a submission from the Wolverine Nordic and Mountain Society, Tumbler Ridge was one of three Canadian communities to receive the coveted Bell True Sport Community Award for 2005 (along with Sherbrooke and Edmonton). With the honour of this prestigious award came a handsome trophy (on display in Council Chambers) and a welcome cheque for $10 000.
WNMS has maintained contact with True Sport ever since, and on November 7th Doug MacQuarrie, Executive Director of the True Sport Foundation, sent a letter of support for the ?It takes a Community to Raise and Athlete? evening. Extracts from this letter include:
?It is clear to us that Tumbler Ridge is a community that clearly understands the contribution sport and recreation can make to a strong and vibrant community. You are to be commended for taking a record number of runners to provincial championships as that speaks to the values of inclusion and excellence; your Emperor?s Challenge and Flatbed Loops recognize the participants? principles of Staying Healthy and Keeping it Fun. The creation of the Sports Hall of Fame and the development of the Athletics Track makes real the community principles of Supporting Excellence and Fostering Healthy, Active Lifestyles.
Congratulations to all community members on your tireless efforts to have ?a Community to Raise and Athlete?. It is quite evident that your receipt of the Bell True Sport Community Award was not the end of a commitment to values driven sport, rather it was just the beginning! Your hard work adds excitement to the True Sport Movement and makes us thankful that Tumbler Ridge continues to lead as a True Sport Community. Best wishes for your continued success!?
