Tumbler Ridge Athlete to compete in Victoria marathon

How long would it take you to run 42 kilometres? Well, Birgit Sharman is hoping to do it in 4 hours and 20 minutes. That?s right, next Saturday, October 10th, Birgit will be running in the Royal Victoria Marathon.

Last Christmas, Birgit was leafing through her running magazines and was inspired to set a goal for herself for the coming year. She realised the big 4-0 was coming up and she had always wanted to run a marathon before her 40th birthday, so this became her goal for 2004. Shortly after she decided to run a marathon, she went on the internet and looked for a marathon to run. She new she wanted lots of time to train and preferred that the training would be during the summer months, she also wanted to run in a large marathon with thousands of other runners. The Victoria marathon was the perfect choice. Rated as one of the top ten marathons in the world and with over 30 thousand runners taking part and an October date this was the marathon Birgit decided on doing.

Challenging herself is not unfamiliar for Birgit. She has been diligently training since spring. Running distances of up to 32 kilometres and competing in the Emperors Challenge have prepared this Tumbler Ridge resident for an even bigger challenge and she is meeting it head on.

You may have seen Birgit running, as she is regularly out training. ?I am amazed at how many people stop me and ask me how my running is going,? says Birgit. ?I was really lucky to have Jen Becker here this summer; she was a great running partner.? Jen Becker did the Dino tours in Tumbler Ridge this summer. She took part in the Fort McMurray marathon and placed second.

Best of luck Birgit and have a great time in Victoria.
