Since the beginning of September the TRE and TRSS cross country running teams have been training diligently. Some of the athletes enjoyed training with the team to increase their overall fitness with their friends, while many students particularly enjoyed running through the beautiful forest trails surrounding Tumbler Ridge.
On October 8 twenty-five members of the team travelled to Dawson Creek to take part in the South Peace Cross Country Meet. The bus trip provided good team-building experience under the supervision of Mr and Mrs Ferguson. Upon arriving in Dawson Creek the team did the necessary warm-ups and stretches to ready themselves for the competition.
There was an incredibly high turnout for the race from many schools in the district – over 320 athletes for the four races. While all athletes excelled, it was Tumbler Ridge that at the end of the day came home with the winner’s plaque, which is given to the team with the best overall score. There was a high proportion of top finishing positions by the TR team members.
Many thanks to the Trevor and Sara Kolkea and Gord Zubyck and their core of helpers in Dawson Creek for putting on this event and promoting healthy lifestyle choices for students in the region, and thanks to the dedicated coaches and parent-helpers in Tumbler Ridge who made this program possible.
The very next day, some of these athletes returned to Dawson Creek to take part in the Dawson Creek Sneak as part of the Wolves Cross Country Running series. Carina, Daniel and Linda Helm, Christopher and Nicholas Mackay, Laura and Natalie Sharman, and Esther and Sheena Walkley all ran and placed well, and have the potential to be amongst the overall winning placings which will be decided on October 23 at the series final in Grande Prairie. Special thanks to Marcia Dufresne for her dynamic cheerleading abilities.
