On January 17, 2009, the District of Tumbler Ridge Fire Department honoured its volunteer firefighters at their Annual General Meeting. Special guests included Mayor White, CAO Kim Isaak, Councillor Schembri, Past Fire Chief Shorty Smith, Sgt. Render, Cst. Harvey and BCAS Unit Chief Ben Kostamo. Six members of the Volunteer Fire Department were awarded with individual plaques for training attendance above 85%. Awards were also given for maintaining above the department average for Duty attendance. Matt Treit was awarded Firefighter of the Year for his excellent leadership and dedication to the department. 2008 marked 15 years of service for Deputy Treit. Congratulations to Captain Diana Vandale (571.6 hours) and firefighter Doug Beale (560.2 hours) for becoming the newest members of the ?500 Hour Club? for emergency duty.

Congratulations to Firefighter Scott Beattie (1092.3 hours) for becoming the newest member of the ?1000 Hour Club? for emergency training. Firefighter Dustin Curry was also recognized for his outstanding duty (97%) and training (100%) attendance.

In 2008 the volunteer firefighters responded to 137 emergency calls, the most in the history of Tumbler Ridge. Most calls were in August (21 calls), on Saturdays (26 calls) between the hours of 8:00 ? 9:00 am and 6:00 ? 7:00 pm (11 calls).
