On Tuesday October 3rd, 35 students from Tumbler Ridge participated in the annual School District 59 Cross Country Running Meet in Dawson Creek. TRE coaches Birgit Sharman and Sandra Schlief, along with teacher Mrs. Leuze and TRSS coach Linda Helm were thrilled with the great effort put in by all of the students. At TRE the students were able to have two practices running on the trails around town in the weeks leading up to this run. At the high school, a dedicated group has been meeting twice per week since the second week of school, and definite improvements have been seen.
The weather was perfect as hundreds of runners from Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge and area lined up to run at Kin Park. In the first event, the Grade 1 and 2 students ran a 1 km loop with a great effort from team members Julie Schlief, Hunter Zatwarniski, Dillon Marsel, Katrina Causa, Leann Fletcher, Darby MacNeil, Casey Strang and Matthew Payne to place third overall. A huge Tumbler team of 14 runners in the grade 3-4 category also placed third. These runners were Tyler Schlief, Christopher Mackay, Brooklyn Collison, Tristen O?Neill, Kelly Fry, Ryan Hunter, Zoe Johnson, Allandale McEwen, Brayden Miller, Caitlin Payne, Sierra Hammond, Jelaina Jensen, Kyla MacNeil and Koal Miller.
Considering there were only six members on the Grade 5-6 team (Laura Sharman, Simone O?Neill, Kailes Thibodeau, Jesse Walker, Dylan Miller and George Muleya), they ran very well to place fourth in an event that saw 100 runners take part. Finally, a very strong team from TRSS entered the 2.4 km Grade 7-8 event and came in first place. Excellent performances were put in by Carina Helm, Michael Webb, Kelsey Legault, Natalie Sharman, Crystal Fry, Jessica Cameron and Krista Trim.
Once all of the results were tallied, Tumbler Ridge came in second place overall. The students can be proud of their achievements. We should see many of these same runners at the Ridge Ramble Cross Country Run on Saturday, October 14th (11 am start time) at the golf course.
