Two Emergency Shelters Get Funding

DAWSON CREEK – Aspen Court and the Red Lion Inn are receiving funding from the provincial government, announced Blair Lekstrom today.

Aspen Court will receive $25,932 and the Red Lion Inn in Chetwynd will get $17,264 to purchase items such as clothing, shoes, blankets, toothpaste, soap and shampoo.

?Here in the Peace, although we?re fortunate to have a strong economy, there are still people who find themselves without a home and need an extra helping hand,? said Lekstrom. ?This funding helps to ensure that those less fortunate in society have access to the goods to help them get back on their feet.?

A total of $2 million in one-time funding is being provided to almost 60 shelters in 30 municipalities. This funding is in addition to the $20 million annual budget for the emergency shelter program, which has increased by more than 40 per cent over the past two years. That increase has allowed for hundreds of additional shelter beds and the extension of the cold/wet weather program by six weeks.

The Emergency Shelter Program operating budget of $20 million supports about 870 year-round shelter beds and more than 380 cold/wet weather beds available from October through April. Additional funding is provided as needed for extra beds in the Capital Regional District and the Lower Mainland during more extreme weather conditions during the winter season.
